Bacton (H)
Sunday 17th May 2009
After some heavy overnight and early morning rain it was a surprise to nearly everyone that the game was played. With Turbo and the two Browns working hard on the pitch the game was played. Skipper Ted Johnston won the toss and elected to bat. Caister raced away to a total of 209 off their 40 overs played on the same pitch that on the day previous the opposistion made only 40. Runs came from Rupert (45) Stokes (88) and PC Sims a thunderous 57 not out. Chubbo having been a hero the previous day became a zero by getting a first ball duck.
A massive Stokes tea was consumed with great relish and Caister set out to defend the total. Opening the bowling for Caister assisted by the wind again was the Windmill actioned Barty. Bowling a tight line(?) into the force 9 gale was skipper Ted as no one else was stupid enough to do it was found, bowlers were lining up with tactical injuries when called upon to bowl at the ATC hut end. The unlucky volunteer behind the stumps was the batting hero Sims, and was kept busy from Ted's spell with some desperate scrambling to collect the wides. Bacton never troubled the Caister total and finished on 123 - 7 with opener Cobb unbeaten on 38 from the 40 overs.
Worstead (A) - Broke cup
Sunday 24th May 2009. Caister beat Worstead by 8 wickets
Caister continued their unbeaten run in the Broke cup by beating Worstead at their wonderful cricket ground. On Inspecting the pitch winning the toss and batting first and score over 200 would be the order of the day. However Ted is known as a useless tosser and lost, so Caister for the second time in 2 days were to field first. Opening the bowling for Caister again were the 2 Chris’s, B and T. In the 12th over Turbo took the wicket of Bob Eagleton with Ted taking the catch. His opening partner would seemed to be going on holiday, as most of the time he was seen wandering down the pitch before the ball was bowled (by several yards!!) - Law 42.15/16 would still apply despite what some of the opposition's thoughts on the matter were. These two bowled their allotted 8 overs each straight through with the first 16 overs costing only 44 runs. Marty replaced Barty and took the wicket of R Eagleton bowling him for 21 with the score on 62. The next wicket to fall came in the 29th over when Rupert took the wicket of A Browne for 29. In the meantime the team feared the worst, as Ted was loosening up to bowl. Nigel Baker’s, sorry Ted’s first over (in-joke for those old enough to remember Nigel!) was a Forest Gump box of chocolates over - the opposition never knew what they were going to get! The Caister team knew what to expect and Keeper Churchy was anticipating the width already and positioned himself at 3rd slip. Ted didn’t disappoint and the first ball nearly pitched on the wicket. His first over contained 5 wides, and the batsman struggled to pick up the line and length. However Ted picked up 3 wickets for 61 runs off his 8 overs, his best spell to date. However he conceded 10 wides of which a couple he thought were dubious despite Churchy struggling to reach them. The only one he got straight accounted for Beedon, who was probably as surprised by it as the rest of us! Rupert picked up 3 for 27 and Worstead finished on 195 – 8. Churchy’s weekend blotted by conceding a bye despite coming off the pad!
Opening the batting for Caister were Rupert and Stokesy, and they set about the bowling from the start. Rupert was in great form hitting the ball to all parts until he fell for 88 in the 26th over with the score on 133. His brother Chubbo joined Stokesy and took the score to 194 before Chubbo played on for 16. Stokesy completed his half century and Plod Talbot hit the winning runs to win the game with nearly 2 overs to spare. Thankfully for the team Ted was not exposed to the bowling and his bat still untouched in combat! Stokesy finished with 73 not out to atone for the previous days duck.
Barney (A)
Sunday 31st May 2009 Caister beat Barney by 6 runs
Caister travelled the highways and byways of Norfolk to play Barney, to Ted and Norm it was a home game. Caister only had 8 players as the two Talbots could not travel further than Fakenham as they hadn’t renewed their passports. Ted looked at the pitch and decided that winning the toss and batting first would be the order of the day. Ted managed to win the toss, but what happened next the captain could never have imagined. Barney kindly provided an umpire, and Keith Brown senior gave him some helpful hints. Opening for Caister were Stokesy and Rupert, and were taking things easy but with the score 3 Stokesy was run out in bizarre circumstances, when Rupert drilled a return straight down the pitch only for the bowler to get a hand on it to the stumps and Stokesy stranded 2 yards down the pitch. Rupert took the attack to Barney but on 17 he was caught behind with the score on 22. Churchy then made his second golden duck of the weekend by giving the bowler an easy return catch. Chubbo made 6 before he was caught behind but Ted was still going strong. He was on 21and then he played his usual straight round a straight one and was bowled. This bought in Turbo who was still running cool with liquid nitrogen through his veins from the previous day, however what happened next made his blood boil. Having faced 4 balls and keeping them out he was then given out LBW. The appeal was more like ‘Howz....’ and the umpire had his finger up before the appeal was cut short. A right arm round the wicket bowler from very wide of the crease had pitched the ball a good 2 feet outside Turbo’s leg stump, but Turbo had to go. Keith Brown senior was a proud man at the decision and nodded his approval. Norm went in and didn’t last long and Caister finished on 58 all out.
In previous times, especially when Mabel was captain, the leader would go missing – walking round flapping his arms like a bird and talking complete twaddle, this would then transfer to his team mates and the whole team would crumble. But Ted was now made of stronger stuff since his Ibiza incident, no Churchill type speech was required, he just told his team mates that the game was still ours to win, and the fat lady wasn’t singing. His team mates were jeered up and took to the field.
The fat lady soon got up to loosen her vocal chords when she saw Ted loosen up to take the first over, but was soon sitting back down when Turbo took the first wicket in the second over. The fat lady got up again when Ted started to bowl his collection of wides, but then he took 2 wickets in 2 balls to leave the opposition at 16 – 3. His hat trick ball should have been a Yorker but surprised everyone (including the batsman) by bowling a bouncer! Turbo then took another wicket in his next over to leave them 16 – 4. Ted continued to bowl and the fat lady was nearly singing. Ted sensed this and took himself off after bowling 7 overs. By then however Turbo had taken another 2 wickets and the score was 23 – 7. A run out meantime helped (especially as it was from one of the 2 players lent to us – many thanks for that, especially as they were better than our fielders!). Turbo continued his spell and picked up his 5th wicket in the 14th over with the score on 43. R Warren had decided to hit out and looked like winning the game for Barney, especially when Ted dropped an easy chance off the bowling of Brains and once more the fat lady got up to sing. However Turbo accounted for his wicket in his 9th over for his 6th wicket, and the 9th of the innings with the score on 50, and could have finished the game if Churchy had taken the easy catch behind the stumps. . However Brains took the last wicket with the score on 52 to leave the Caister team wondering how they had done it. Turbo’sblood boiling had made him produce his best figures for years! He finished with 6 - 24 off 9 overs with 4 wickets being bowled. Just for the record Ted bowled 8 wides!
Fakenham A (H)
Sunday 7th June 2009 Fakenham (H)
Match abandonded due to rain.
Acle (A)
Sunday 14th June 2009 Caister beat Acle by 6 wickets
Caister travelled to Acle and found that they had arrived with 12 men. Turbo took a look at the conditions to ascertain who should drop out. With a hard flat pitch, hot sunny afternoon, short boundary on one side, and most importantly the bar open all afternoon he bravely offered to sit this one out.
Caister lost the toss and spent the afternoon in the field, Turbo spent the afternoon in and out of the bar, and shouting abuse at his team mates. Barty opened from one end and Marty 1 from the other. Bart bowled Jones for 2 and Marty took the wicket of Oakey for 0. The 3rd wicket fell on 46 when Marty 2 had McMahon had caught by Marty 1. Danny replacing the drunk Turbo replaced Marty 2 and picked 2 wickets. The ego landed, and Ted decided to bowl himself.Thankfully for him the umpire didn’t know what a wide was despite Ted showing him plenty. Opener Handley made 61 before the returning Marty 1 had him caught by Churchy.Barty returned and took another 2 wickets and Acle’s innings ended on 131 – 8. Ted must have regretted dropping Turbo after missing out on all the bowling points. The Talbots taking 3 catches between them – Marty 1, two and Plod, sorry Poirot one.
Opening the batting for Caister were Stokesy and Rupert. Rupert played his second crap shot of the weekend and was out for a duck, and a weekend average of 1.5.Danny replaced him and scored more than Rupert – 3 more to be precise and Norm made 2 more than Rupert. Chubbo joined Stokesy and they took to the score to 73 before Stokesy was out for 29. Marty 1 joined Chubbo and helped him to his 50. Marty 1 stood firm and kept out the good balls. Chubbo hit the winning runs in the 36th over and finished on 84 not out and a weekend average of 102, Marty 1 finished on 2 not out in a stand of 59. Ted like scoring rate!
The new Brown family motto is - Rupert promises, Chubbo delivers!
Bunwell (H) - Broke Cup
Sunday 21st June 2009. Caister beat Bunwell by 154 runs
Caister played their second home of the weekend and again were asked to make first use of the wicket. Using the same wicket from the previous days rain affected match Caister, opened with Stokesy and Rupert. Stokesy only made 6, bowled behind his legs, and must of been cursing his luck after what happened next. Ted along with Rupert took the score from 29 – 1 to 298 – 2, a partnership of 269 which has left the club statistician searching for anything that can match it. Ted was the wicket to fall on 92, when Rupert decided that Ted had scored enough and ran him out for the sake of the rest of the teams welfare. Ali had taught him well and the team was excused Ted telling everyone that his innings was like one Steve Waugh’s greatest . Rupert in the meantime had passed his 50, his century and a century and a half by this time. In the same over Rupert got himself out when a big score beckoned, and fell for 160. Sherlock Talbot and Chubbo finished the innings on 308 for 3. Rupert’s innings included 4 sixes and 26 fours. Ted’s innings included no sixes and 15 fours.
Marty Talbot opened the bowling for Caister with Marty Hewitt at the other end. Marty 1 Bowled Cannel for 6 and Hales for 1. Marty 2 was fruitless in his search for wickets.Turbo’s late replacement S Verma replaced Marty 1 and his spin accounted for Parfitt for 12 with a great catch by Ted. He should have picked up another 2 or 3 but was let down by the fielders and once by himself. Stormin’ Norman was unlucky not to take a wicket but bowled well.Brains took 3 – 43, aided by 2 stumpings by Churchy.Sherlock Talbot bowling for the first time this year cleaned up the tail and ended up with 4 – 13. Opener Girling the only resistance to the Caister attack scoring 54. Bunwell finished exactly half way to Caister’s total on 154.
Quebec (A)
Sunday 28th June 2009 Caister beat Quebec by 140 runs
Caister picked up maximum points by beating Quebec by 140 runs at Pilling Park. Turbo Tennant picked up 3 of his own when stopped by the rozzers on the A47 on the way back. Apparently his car topped his top bowling speed as he was recorded doing 93mph.
Caister won the toss and elected to bat. Opening with Stokesy was Saurab Verma and took the score to 54 when Verma was bowled for 22. Ted came in at 3 and hit 25 and Sherlock Talbot replaced him. Stokesy smelt the teas and decided he had enough batting practice and fell for 78. Elliot Gooch only made 2 but Marty the little upstart with the aid of his dad plodded along to the end to reach 204 at the end of the 40 overs.
Opening the bowling for Caister were Elliot Gooch and Marty Hewitt. After 12 these 2 had put Quebec in some trouble at 44 – 7. A run out by Sherlock Talbot also helped. Elliot finished with 4 – 9 off 6 overs with some quick bowling that scared not only the batsmen but also Churchy. Sean Jury picked up a wicket and Verma and Norm picked up the last 2 to leave Quebec all out on 64. There was a altercation in the field when Norm decided that the local scrotes needed bringing down a peg or two and threatened to take them all on. Son Ted decided that he was going to stop his old man from getting a criminal record, but the kids soon realised they were dealing with the Caister’s hard man and backed off.
Great Ellingham (H) Cup
Sunday 12th July Caister lose to Great Ellingham by 5 wickets in Broke cup semi final
Caister finally tasted defeat in the Broke Cup for the first time when defeated by Great Ellingham by 5 wickets. After heavy overnight rain the pitch was going to be moist but hard after a heavy rolling stint in the morning. Caister would take to the field with only 10 men on this important day as Pies had a letter from his mother excusing him games today, on closer inspection it was believed to be fake letter as it was signed “his mum”The previous days heavy landing taking its toll. Caister won the toss and elected to bat first hoping that the drying wicket later would produce the wickets. Opening for Caister were Stokesy and Rupert and they got off to a flyer with 72 on the board when Rupert rode his luck once too often and top edged a short delivery to slip. He had previously been dropped on the boundary and played on, but a no ball was called. He fell for 48 when a big score looked on. Ted following on from his recent run of form was dropped early on by one that even Jim Kerrison would not have missed without his glasses! Stokesy fell for 49 and Ted only made 18 before he fell, Chubbo made 13, Barty made 3 and Marty closely followed him with a golden duck. Brains had been batting well in the meantime and with the aid of Churchy saw Caister finish on 192 – 6, at least 20 to 30 runs short of a good total. Brains finished on 32 not out,
After another great tea (thank you Mrs Brown!) Caister took to the field with one man short and opened with Barty and Marty. Both took a wicket in their first spell and Great Ellingham were 20 – 2 but the run rate was high from the start. Barty not helping with his collection of Jim like no-balls. Turbo replaced Marty and in the 12th over controversy ensued when Churchy run out Macintosh for 8 with the score on 55. The opener Cooper was being resolute in defence and picked up runs off the bad balls (there were enough of them!) and picking up singles whenever possible. Ted then let loose his big guns and threw some overthrows from one side of the pitch to the other, when he missed the stumps, where 2 people were backing up and threw between the stumps, where no one was backing up. Churchy desperately tried to back pedal to catch the wayward throw but could not collect it and the ball went for a 6 including the overthrows. Ted decided to bowl himself and the only thing that is worthy of mention is that in his spell he conceded his 50th wide of the season. Brains took the wicket of Hawkins, but Potter and Dodd helped Cooper to chase down the total. In the 39th over Great Ellingham reached the required total, Potter batting sensibly for 71 not out. The shortage of one man in the field, a total that should have been higher and bowling not up to the usual standard (13 wides and 10 no balls!!) all contributed to the defeat.
Drayton (H)
Sunday 19th July 2009 - Drayton conceded game
Caister were unable to either face or deliver a ball all weekend when Drayton could not field a side due to injuries picked up over the weekend. Hopefully the weather and luck will improve for next week.
Bacton (A)
Sunday 25th July Caister beat Bacton by 2 wickets
Caister travelled to Bacton to try and keep their unbeaten record. Bacton won the toss and elected to bat first. Caister’s opening attack of Turbo and Marty 1 had Bacton’s opening pair playing and missing but not getting a touch. Turbo being ofa rotund unfit nature was given the task of bowling uphill into the stiff breeze whilst young whipper snapper Marty 1 had the choice of ends and decided that his advancing years of 16 was enough to have the wind and hill! Nobby Cobb was first to go bowled by Turbo for 13 by a ball that pitched and moved up the slope then swung back onto his off stump – unplayable! He would have picked up another wicket if it wasnt for the fact that Ali was asleep at point and dropped a sitter. Vihm joined Olley and took the score to 86 before Vihm fell victim to the new Bond Villain ‘Golden Arm’ played by Stokesy for 36. Olley was next to depart for 25 Clouseau Talbot being the bowler. Resistance fell away with only Caine able to reach double figures. Marty 2 was asked to bowl a tight line and length uphill into the wind and produced a spell of bowling that Ted was proud of. He somehow managed to take 5 wickets with the worst spell of bowling seen this year by a Caister bowler. Bacton closed on 128 all out and did not seem to be a difficult total to chase.
Stokesy and Rupert set off in pursuit of 129 to win. A stunning catch at deep fine leg saw Stokes trudge off the field for 3, and debutant Sree Vajrala was dismissed lbw, somewhat harshly by the look of it. Rupert decided that he had enough and holed out in the deep for 39 and father looking on was not impressed with his Golden Child’s batting performance, and threatened to send him to his room early with no Chinese later. Marty 2 lasted not long before ‘doing a ted’ and played round a straight one, going to the top of the duck league courtesy of having a golden duck in his total of 3. Churchy could only make 3 and Inspector Clouseau Talbot made 9, followed by son Marty 1 who was judged LBW, again a bit harsh for a duck. Chubbo knuckled down and not for the first time this season was showing his twin brother how to bat for the team. However he lost Ali when he was the 3rd LBW decision to Vihm, this one looked plumb though, Ali pleading that it would never have hit the stumps, despite appealing every time he hits the pads when bowling. Ali making his season’s debut made a duck. Caister’s batsmen were having a bad day collapsing to 73 for 8. Chubbo and skipper Ted got their heads down, well Chubbo did, Ted couldn’t as he was suffering from a stiff neck! and set about trying to win the game that looked to be slipping away. Overs were not a problem, just the wickets down. Bacton slowly saw the game drop through their hands like an Ali catch, as Chubbo 45 not out and Ted 21 not out saw Caister home with over 10 overs to spare.
Barney (H)
Sunday 2nd August 2009, Caister beat Barney by 9 wickets
Caister entertained Barney on a damp pitch after overnight rain. Barney won the toss and elected to bat first. Opening for Caister were Turbo and Marty 1 and soon had the batsmen in trouble with swing and seam movement. In the 9th over Turbo picked up the first wicket. Ali replacing Marty1 picked up another but his errant bowling was replaced by Brains, who then went on to complete a decent spell of bowling, marred by a confrontation between 2 like-minded players. Dismissing Clarke a confrontation ensued between 2 Villlage idiots, which looked like ruining a good afternoon. Brains finished with 5 – 19 and Marty 2 took 3 – 13. Barney finished on 106 – 10.
Opening for Caister were Marty 2 and Rupert and in the 1st over Rupert gave 2 chances but soon hit top form. Marty 2 only made 1 and was replaced by Sree.
Rupert decided to hit out and soon made his 50. Sree hit some good shots with one in particular worth noting, a cut over cover for 6. Sree made 28 not out and Rupert 77 not out to complete the required total in less than 14 overs.
Fakenham A (A)
Sunday 9th August 2009, Caister beat Fakenham A by 51 runs
Caister travelled to Fakenham aiming to continue their unbeaten record in the Sunday league. With more players available than the required number there was going to be some unlucky members who would not take part. Turbo was somewhat controversially dropped and Chubbo stepped down to let Brains play. Caister batted first and nearly everyone got a start but couldn’t convert it to a big one except Stokesy who scored 68. Rupert made 20, Clouseau Talbot 17, Ted 13, Marty1 12. Brains got a duck and is working his way up the duck hunting league table. Caister finished on 170 for 8 off their allotted 40 overs.
Opening the bowling for Caister were Marty1 and Marty2 and kept the first 10 overs to 16 runs. A run out by Ted in the first over picked up the first wicket but it was not until the 24th over that the second wicket fell to Brains. He picked up another wicket and with Stokesy kept the run rate down. Sree also picked up a wicket and another run out by Marty1 kept Fakenham down to 119 for 7. Churchy bowled his first over of the season as it was deemed safe enough as they were not going to reach the total
Pitch and Putt Open Chamionship
Sunday 16th August 2009 – Caister Cricket Club Pitch and Putt Open Championship
With no game on the fixture list it was decided that a pitch and putt competition would be organized to find the club bandit. 10 competitors entered the open and were split into 2 groups of 3 and one of four. In the first group were Turbo, Dick ‘the legend’ Wedon and Chubbo. Second group had course and golf specialists Stokesy, Senior and Ted. The last group had non golf specialists Brains, Rupert, Danny and Matt. At just after 12:15 the first group headed out on the notorious Bure Park Pitch and Putt Course and battle commenced.
The winner of the first group was the legend with score of 65, aided by 2 consecutive 2’s. Turbo was going well until the wheels came off the wagon around the 13th hole when his putting went a bit ‘Mabel style’ and assisted by some awful pitching, finished on 69. Chubbo was pleased to get round without losing his dads favourite ball.
The winner of the last group was undetermined as Steven Hawking was unavailable to calculate the score cards, thankfully they all made it back while it was still daylight and no search party was sent out to look for them. Brains managed to get round without breaking his ankle by falling into a rabbit hole, and batsmen all over Norfolk were relieved!
However the eventual winner came from the second group. Senior was spotted hacking his way round the course, hitting several divots further than the ball. Stokesy played the low and safe game, whilst the star of the show Ted showed everyone how to do it with a winning round of 64 despite some awful shots and missing a one foot putt. Well done Tiger Ted!
CAISTER CRICKET CLUB - PROBABLY THE BEST ON THE NET !
