2007 Broke Cup Final

Mid Norfolk Sunday League – The Broke Challenge Cup Final

Caister 201/5 beat Hethersett & Tas Valley 82 All Out by 119 runs

On bank holiday Caister had the unique opportunity of doing the league and cup double with them facing a league higher team Hethersett at the ideal Sprowston Cricket Ground.

On a gorgeous hot and sunny day, Captain S.Kerrison won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a batsman paradise.

Opening for the Lifeboat men were Mabel and KP Cool and they soon took the attack to the bowlers with Mabel particularly harsh on anything short.  After 10 over’s Caister had reached 40/0 and the imperative good start had been achieved.

KP Cool and Mabel continued to dominate the Hethersett bowling with the ball disappearing to all parts which had the crowd going wild on the boundary. After 20 over’s they had took the score up to 90 and a score of 200 plus was the aim.

Unfortunately disaster struck for Caister when just as KP was in full flow he was adjudged to be LBW for a quality 28 in the 21st over.

Greeny joined Mabel and these two cautiously took the score up to 112 off 28 over’s until Mabel was bowled when  he danced down the wicket and elbowed the ball onto the stumps for a captain’s innings of 63.

Rupert the joined Greeny at the crease and these two soon set loose with them smashing anything in sight to the boundary.  In just 5 over’s the two took Caister up to 155 until Rupert was unlucky to be caught by one that popped.

The sacrificial lamb of chubbo then came in and out to use up the valuable toilet time of Brown Bear who was getting rid of some extra weight to help him launch.

In came Brown Bear and the toilet time worked wonders as he turned the game in the space of just three balls.  Caister were 164/4 off 37 over’s and a total of 180 seemed the destined total.  Big Dick had other ideas however as he hit the next over for 21 runs with 3 consecutive shut eye sixes and some even more unbelievable quick singles with Greeny.

In the last two over’s Pies, Greeny and finally Churchy helped Caister over the psychological 200 mark and the players went in for a big tea very satisfied.  Greeny scored an excellent 38 whilst Brown Bear finished 30* and church with a vital 0*.

Opening the bowling for Caister was the ever reliable Turbo Tennant and Brown Bear who was on a high after his honey licking innings.

Something just clicked for both bowlers and they soon got into the Heathersett batsmen with Pies picking up the wicket of Shelly with the 5th ball of the match.  Turbo up the other end was running in like never before and the batsman struggled to get a bat on ball from both bowlers.

Brown Bear soon took another wicket of Ellis which left Hethersett struggling severely on 14/2 a quarter of the way through their innings.

The intense pressure on the Hethersett batsman soon took affect with 3 quick wickets then falling for just 5 runs which left the score on 17/5 off 16 over’s.  Turbo Tennant took two of these wickets with quality swing bowling and Brown Bear took the other one with a chicken and mushroom.

Change bowlers Bartram (windmill) and Greeny then came onto bowl and they continued where the openers had left off, with some excellent swing and seam bowling.

With 20 over’s reaming Hethersett were 47/6 and they simply had to go for it which worked to Caister’s advantage with Greeny and Bartram picking up the final four wickets to bowl Heathersett out for 82 which was 119 runs shy of Caister’s total.

The bowling display of the Caister players was simply awesome on a batsman paradise and everyone can be proud of their achievements against a strong Hethersett team.

This was truly a excellent all round performance by the whole team and this season has been one to remember.

 Well done everyone!
